What is Haute Couture?

The term "Haute Couture" has entered our language from French. Its Turkish pronunciation is "otkutür." In Turkish, it is translated as "high sewing" In terms of application, it involves high sewing and self-preparation techniques. Beyond the technique, it is used to denote the custom and unique design of daily clothing, evening gowns, nightwear, and even bridal dresses.

The emergence of Haute Couture was in the 1700s with Rose Bertin. She is also the fashion designer of the Queen of France, Marie Antoinette. The concept of Haute Couture emerged as a result of Rose Bertin sewing special clothes for Marie Antoinette that no one else had.

The person who helped spread the word Haute Couture was the English tailor Charles Frederic Worth. You can read here why Charles Frederic Worth is known as the father of Haute Couture in the fashion world.

This term was protected as a fashion term by France in 1945. And today it is used for personalized bespoke clothing. However, today it is estimated that there are only 4000 Haute Couture customers left in the world.

The important thing at this point is that not every personalized dress will be Haute Couture. For Haute Couture designs, one must be a member of the "Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture" union. It is not easy to become a member of the workshop. For example, each design must be sewn with care and quality materials must be used, from needle to thread. From the number of employees to their hourly wages and even the decoration of the workshop. There are rules. Ateliers are obliged to prepare 2 collections consisting of at least 35-40 pieces per fashion show every year. All clothes are sewn only by hand, after hundreds of hours of effort.
